Gabriel Fauré
Andante, Op. 75
The wonderfully beautiful and powerful Andante by Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) is a superior example of the composer at the height of his compositional prowess. Emerging from Fauré's meticulous but delicate melody is a feeling of unsettled passion. And, although we return to a familiar theme, we still do not feel settled as the tension continues to build and the soloist finally breaks away for one last explosive declamation. Just as quickly as the soloist escapes the confines of register and dynamic, they are pulled back to a mood of tranquility and reflection. The story of this Andante is short-lived, but does not say more than is necessary.
