Alto in Violet was created specifically as a solo virtuoso saxophone work that could hold its own against a concert of electrical guitarists celebrating the music of Jimi Hendrix.

As a collaboration between saxophonist SAXIMUS (Todd Rewoldt) and composer Joseph Waters, Alto in Violet makes a clear reference to Hendrix’s signature hit “Purple Haze” and continues as a through-composed showcase of technical and rhythmic prowess. Adding to the physical demands of performing Alto in Violet are the influences of Hendrix’s signature guitar string bends, distortion, and generous use of register.
